Chains Find Even More Hostile Environment in S.F.

San Francisco's historic resistance to chain stores is gathering strength, even in the face of vacant storefronts throughout the city. A paint company planning to locate in the city's Mission District was blocked by the Planning Commission, and although its request to locate in San Francisco will be reconsidered today, it is an example of an increasing resistance to such stores.

Currently Supervisor Tom Ammiano is working toward legislation to ban all chains from stretches in the Mission and Bernal Heights districts. This is in addition to the existing chain bans in Hayes Valley and North Beach.
