Home Depot has walked away from a plan to open a store on San Francisco's Bayshore Boulevard -- a controversial proposal that has been in the works for nearly 10 years. The retailer cited a troubled home-improvement market as its reason for dropping the San Francisco store.

"We've decided to focus on our existing stores rather than expanding," Home Depot spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We're hoping to be in a strong position once the business climate improves."
