One of San Diego County's leading gaming facilities, the Viejas Resort and Casino (pictured), is about to undergo a growth spurt. Property owner and operator Viejas Enterprises, a division of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, has just revealed that it will enlarge the existing destination via an $800 million expansion program.

Located about 30 miles from San Diego in Alpine, Calif., Viejas was born as Viejas Casino Turf Club in 1991 and was the first casino in San Diego County. The resort has since grown in size by leaps and bounds; a recent expansion involved the addition of 48,000 square feet for more gaming space and a bar and lounge in 2006 to bring the property's current size up to 248,000 square feet. The latest expansion plans will result in a new casino, a hotel with spa and retail, meeting space, a movie theater and an additional parking structure; all of which will be located adjacent to the existing Viejas property. Completion of the project is on target for 2012.

Viejas is not alone in its intent to capitalize on the sizzling gaming market in the area. "There has been demand all along and the market is now catching up to that demand," a Viejas spokesman told CPN today. The Pauma Band of Mission Indians is planning to replace its temporary Casino Pauma with a $300 million development consisting of a 384-room hotel, a 1,500-seat event center and 105,000 square feet of meeting and office space. Earlier this spring at the Valley View Casino, the San Pasqual Tribe debuted a new 62,000-square-foot gaming space, the initial phase of its $114 million expansion endeavor. Additionally, San Diego County's largest casino, Pala, will undergo a $100 million, 98,000-square-foot expansion at the hands of the Pala Band of Mission Indians.

The Alpine, Calif.-based Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians is recognized by the U.S. Federal Government as a sovereign government.
