Bustling downtown San Diego is about to add 239 more rooms to its hotel pool as work commences on a new Residence Inn by Marriott. Hansji Hotels Inc. is developing the property.

Located on a half-acre parcel in the historic Gaslamp Quarter just a block from the San Diego Convention Center, the 12-story Residence Inn will maintain the façade of an existing structure that is one of many Victorian buildings that were developed in the area between 1880 and 1910. In addition to the guest suites, the extended-stay hotel will also feature 8,000 square feet of retail space, as well as a three-level parking facility. Awbrey Cook McGill Architects is overseeing the design of the property.

With downtown San Diego experiencing a growth spurt, the Residence Inn will be in a market where the call for additional hotel rooms is getting stronger and stronger. "The transition from suburban to urban living in San Diego has created more demand for extended-stay hotels," Jeff Wanders, Hansji vice president of operations, told CPN. "Demand downtown is also increasing because of the Convention Center and the baseball stadium, PETCO Park, which opened in 2004." Hansji's new Residence Inn is on target to reach completion in 2009.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Hansji Hotels develops and renovates premier hotel properties, and operates over 1,700 rooms in the southwestern United States. Presently, the company has a total of five  projects in the works valued an aggregate $300 million.
