In Warm Phoenix, Open-Air Shopping Centers Struggle to Beat Summer Heat

In the Phoenix area, four newly debuted regional outdoor lifestyle centers are about to face a major test: Can they keep their shoppers cool? Tempe Marketplace, Mesa Riverview, SanTan Villlage and the Promenade at Casa Grande are finding themselves mulling ways to keep customers strolling through, even as temperatures surpass 100 degrees.

"A misting system will work during the dry months," Arizona State University Sustainability Practices manager Bonny Bentzin told the Arizona Daily Republic. "But in July and August? Not so much. Shade is the key."

Arizona Biltmore to Get $300M Facelift
The Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa is set to undergo a $300 million renovation. Initial plans for the renovation call for the addition of 300 guest rooms, a spa and expanded restaurant facilities. The resort's owners are hoping that the city of Phoenix will approve their zoning request, which was filed on July 9.
Avent Building FORT Takes New Suburban Phoenix BTS
Despite a local office market pushing 19 percent vacancy, the newly-constructed Avnet Building in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler was sold to FORT Properties Inc. for $35.2 million.
