Las Vegas's McCarran International Airport has awarded a $1.2 billion construction contract to Perini Building Co.
Under terms of the deal, locally-based Perini will build a new terminal building, underground automated transit system and an aircraft ramp. Construction is slated to begin in August on Terminal 3 (pictured), which includes an elevated roadway structure fronting the facility, over roadway pedestrian bridges, among other features. The construction timeline to complete the entire project is estimated at three and a half years. The steel-framed terminal is approximately 1.9 million square feet and will have a basement, three upper levels and roof-level penthouses. The elevated roadway will extend the length of the terminal and will include a concrete box girder with cast concrete columns. The contract also includes pedestrian bridges leading to parking.
Other projects Perini has built at McCarran include Terminal D, Charter International Terminal, Central Terminal, as well as the central heating and cooling plant.
Elsewhere in Las Vegas, Perini built the Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino and is also the primary contractor for the $8 billion Las Vegas CityCenter mixed-use project.
The growth of the airport supports the findings of Grubb & Ellis Co., which listed Las Vegas atop its rankings on both population and job growth in a first quarter report.
With construction on the Strip booming and thousands of jobs being created to service the hotel and gaming industries, the Las Vegas economy will continue to see further job growth in other sectors of the economy, too, according to the report.
In late 2006, construction began on the multi-million dollar enhancement of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The effort to improve the center is one of several components of the LVCVA's five-year marketing plan geared toward supporting the destination's enormous growth and reaching the goal of a record-setting 43 million visitors by 2009. Further evidence of the growth comes from a July 3 CPN report about the deal between Los Angeles-based CIM Group and the city to develop land adjacent to the planned Mob Museum in the city’s historic Post Office Block.
Perini is a construction services company that provides general contracting, construction management and design/build services to private clients and public agencies. In business since 1894, the firm also offers general contracting, pre-construction planning and project management services, including the planning and scheduling of the manpower, equipment, materials and subcontractors required for a project.
