Broward Officials Green-Light Convention Hotel
June 12, 2008

Broward County commissioners this week gave the green light to a planned Hilton convention center hotel, along with a vow to subsidize the hotel's marketing efforts if necessary. The deal, which was approved by a 5-3 vote, means the county will sell $440 million in bonds in order to build the 1,000-room hotel alongside the convention center.

The county will also spend between $6 and $15 million annually to market the hotel, but this subsidy will only be in effect if the Hilton fails to meet marketing goals. "This hotel is not risky at all, but a safe bet for the county," Commissioner Kristin Jacobs told the Miami Herald.
