Development May Threaten Miami River Businesses

Maritime businesses along the Miami River are voicing concern that the Miami City Commission's idea of stripping zoning protections may leave their livelihood in danger. The area's shipping and boat-repair businesses worry that real estate development could come their way from the downtown area, increasing their property taxes beyond their means.

"The taxes alone can force people out of the properties," Miami River Marine Group executive director Fran Bohnsack told the South Florida Business Journal. She said that since the river businesses rely upon one another, the departure of some could rock the boat for others.
