Whither the Humble Supermarket?

Where has the neighborhood supermarket gone? Lower-income areas in the New York city boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are keenly feeling the loss, as reported by the New York Times. According to the city's food-workers union, there are only 550 decently sized supermarkets left in the city.

Rising rents and low profit margins are behind much of the store closings, the Times reports. Meanwhile, wheelchair-bound Della Dorsett must maneuver several blocks uphill from her nearest market. "We have nothing around here now," she told the Times.
