Long seen as the more modest stepsister to four-year schools, community colleges in San Diego are today getting impressive makeovers. Fitness centers, bookstores, and cafeterias are now common elements in multi-million dollar development renovations taking place on community college campuses throughout the county.

San Diego's three community colleges are currently spending $1.5 billion in taxpayer money to upgrade campuses. Those upgrades include a $66 million cafeteria and bookstore at Mesa College, a $34 million cafeteria, bookstore, and student center at Miramar College, and an $11 million gym renovation at City College, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
