Taking the next big step in the development of a new corporate headquarters for Canon Americas, leading imaging solutions provider Canon U.S.A. has revealed that it will file site plans with the Long Island town of Huntington, N.Y., for the project tomorrow.

The planned 650,000-square-foot building (pictured) will ultimately be home to an estimated 2,500 employees. Canon has called Long Island home for 37 years and after 20 years of searching for a place to expand, decided to stay put on the island. "We looked in New York on Long Island and several other places off Long Island, as well as New Jersey and Connecticut," said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president with Canon U.S.A., who spoke with CPN today.

The new headquarters will be located in the Town of Huntington's Melville community on a 52-acre parcel off the Long Island Expressway that Canon agreed to acquire just over one year ago from The Holiday Organization for a reported $100 million. "It was the only location suitable on Long Island," Liebman said. "There are very few large vacant parcels on Long Island, and we wanted to have room to build a corporate campus."

With the development of the new office facility, Canon will be able to consolidate 1,000 employees currently located in approximately 350,000 square feet of leased office space within four buildings in Lake Success. Additionally, Canon will be going green with this project, as it has been designed to meet qualifications for LEED Silver certification. Liebman noted that environmentally friendly elements of the project will include "landscape design that will utilize native species, and drought resistant vegetation to reduce the need for water."

After presenting its site plan to the Town of Huntington tomorrow, Canon must await the approval of the Huntington Town Planning Board, Suffolk County and the New York State Department of Transportation before work can kick off on the headquarters project. Turner Construction has been tapped to serve as general contractor on the development and, Liebman said, if all goes according to schedule, "we are hoping it will be completed by late 2010."
